Save for retirement and tuition

Retirement and savings
  • The Teacher Retirement System of Texas (TRS) retirement program provides a wide array of benefits including retirement, disability and death benefits, as authorized by law.

  • If you work 20 or more hours per week for at least four and a half months in one school year, your membership begins after your 90th day of employment.

  • Your contributions begin on your first day of employment.

  • All permanent employees of Aldine ISD are required to be TRS members.

How it works

You agree to commit 7.7% of your taxable income as a payroll deduction. 7.05% goes into a TRS Annuity account. The remaining 0.65% goes into a TRS-Care account.

TRS calculates retirement benefits using the average of your highest three years of salary multiplied by your number of years of service and a multiplier of 2.3%.

For example, if the average of your highest three years of salary is $50,000 and you’re retiring after 30 years of service, multiply $50,000 by 30 to get $1,500,000. Multiply that by 2.3% (.023) to get a yearly retirement annuity of $34,500.

403(b) retirement supplement
  • 403(b) tax-sheltered annuities/mutual fund supplements TRS retirement benefits under section 403(b) of the Internal Revenue Code.

  • Tax-sheltered annuities (TSAs) are interest-earning accounts made up of various stocks and bonds.

  • Earnings accumulate tax deferred and are available upon retirement.

How to participate

If you qualify and want to participate, you must contact TCG Administrators, the plan administrator for Region 10 RAMS, and select a certified annuity provider. You then complete a form authorizing pre-tax deductions from your paycheck to be invested by the company or mutual fund you choose. Enrollment forms are available online.

457(b) retirement savings plan
  • The district also offers a 457(b) plan for retirement savings for all employees.

  • This voluntary savings plan supplements your TRS retirement income and provides an alternative to 403(b) programs.

  • The 457(b) lets you make pre-tax contributions through payroll deductions.

  • Contributions and earnings grow tax-deferred until you withdraw them.

  • The plan is administered by Public Agency Retirement Services (PARS).

How the plan works

You determine how much you want to contribute on a pre-tax basis from your pay. The 2016 limit is $18,000. Contribution limits are in addition to any existing 403(b) contributions. You don’t pay taxes until you receive distributions.

The plan offers about five investment product choices. There’s no penalty tax on early withdrawals, and fees associated with 457(b) products are typically lower than those with a 403(b) plan due to competitive bidding.

401(a) matching plan
  • The district offers a 401(a) matching plan for retirement savings, a retirement plan under section 401(a) of the Internal Revenue Code.

  • The district contributes a base match of your annual contributions to your 403(b) or 457(b) account if you contribute at least one percent of your gross compensation to either plan.

  • You can earn additional matching based on your attendance.

  • To receive the district match, you must still be employed on August 31 of each year.

  • The plan is administered by Public Agency Retirement Services (PARS).

The plan offers a base match of 100% of your 403(b) contribution up to .5% of your gross income. If you have perfect attendance, the plan adds 200% up to 1% of your gross income. Or, if you miss between a half-day and two days, the plan provides an additional 100% up to .5% of your gross total.

You must earn a year of credited service to receive matching for each plan year, which means you must work at least 90 days of the plan year at the district. If you work less than a full contract year, but earn a year of credited service, you’re eligible for the base match, but not an additional attendance match.

You’re 100% vested in district matching contributions when you complete six years of credited service, which means you own 100% of the district matching funds in your account. If you retire with six years of credited service and qualify for a TRS service retirement, you receive the district match for your final plan year, even if you are not still employed on August 31.
